A Different Perspective of Springfield, Ohio

During a recent motorcycle ride through the county, I commented to my wife how beautiful the scenery appeared. She agreed, and replied "you should see it through my glasses". Instantly I began to think how people see the same situations differently, depending on their perspective. The lenses through which my wife looked intensified the trees, cornfields, and color of the sky, thereby enhancing their beauty to her. So it is with perspective; if you are happy and content you often see situations totally differently than if you were disgruntled or sad.

In recent days, as I have shopped, and worked, throughout our city, I have been struck by the negative perspectives, many of my friends and neighbors have displayed towards the city of Springfield. I am certain you have heard many of the same things and perhaps, have even given voice to some of them. "I believe it is time for a different perspective".

I would be the first to admit that we as a city, have some very definite challenges before us, and it would be foolish to say we don't. Yet there are some extremely positives changes that have occurred, and are continuing to occur in Springfield. It is all about our perspective and how we choose to look at these changes.

I am not suggesting we only view the city through "rose colored glasses", choosing to deny the fiscal, and social ills we face. But on the other hand, what good does it do any of us to only have a negative and critical perspective, one which preaches there is nothing of any value going on in our midst.

Instead. I call for a perspective which says; we have some tough issues before us, but these problems are not insurmountable, and with a little debate, conversation, and hard work, we could solve them, or at the very least, lessen their negative impact on our city. I am calling for all of us to put on a new pair of glasses, and begin to see all of the beauty, all the advantages, and all the possibilities, in this place we call home, Springfield, Ohio!
