6 Benefits of Forgiving

Forgiveness, most have heard it preached, few have seen it lived!

All of us have endured pain in our lives and all of us have struggled with forgiving. Forgiveness is one of the most unnatural actions in any human's life.  When we are hurt our natural reaction is to protect ourselves, and survive at any cost.

For some, this survival means they develop an aggressive demeanor, they retaliate, digging their heels in the dirt and angrily declare, "I dare anyone to try that again".  They shield themselves from others, protected in the armor of strength, independence, and often anger.

Others are not as confrontational, they retreat inward, locking their thoughts, feelings, and pain, deep within like a special treasure stored in a chest.  They believe that by keeping their emotions hidden away they are protecting themselves from further abuse and brokenness.

In my opinion, forgiving a wrong is the single most difficult thing a person will ever do, but it is also the most important.  Katherine Pidermans Ph.D, and Staff Chaplain at the Mayo Clinic, lists the follow six benefits of living a life of forgiveness.
  • Healthier relationships
  • Greater spiritual and psychological well-being
  • Less stress and hostility
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Fewer symptoms of depression, anxiety and chronic pain
  • Lower risk of alcohol and substance abuse
Life is too short to live mired in the hurts of the past. It's time to move on!
